Many of the figures that we find represented in the Edakkal caves appear to have what might be masks, or head dresses, which link the human to a spirit world. One such mask like head dress seems to be comprised of nine squares, fitted into a kind of magic square, that we find later in Mandala forms. This pattern of nine squares, in which we also find a pattern of crosses, must have indicated possibly a Divine Being, or Creator figure. The mysterious face of this Being is itself a manifestation of the whole structure of the universe.
